    Weekly Update: Week of 11/5

    Hello, Tiger Band families!

Is it just me or is this year literally flying by?! I can’t believe it’s already November and the week of our last district game! And how about those TIGERS?!! District Champions - WOO-HOO!! What an awesome year for Stony Point - and it’s far from over! As of now, the “5ATexasFootball.com” website is predicting that our first play-off game will be against Bryan High School, whose current record is 4 wins/4 losses. With that competition (compared to our 7 wins/1 loss), it looks as if we’ll be playing at least into the Thanksgiving holidays. Remember, play-off games are single-elimination, meaning when we lose, we’re done. As I stated in an earlier email, we won’t know any specifics about any play-off game until the week of the play-off game. But I promise that as soon as information is made available, we will let you know. Here are your reminders for this week:

  • Sunday, 11/4: Daylight Saving Time ends - don’t for get to set your clocks back one hour! z-z-z-z-z-z-z
  • Monday, 11/5: VERY IMPORTANT Band Booster Meeting at 7:00 pm in the bandhall. We are going to be discussing and voting on an opportunity that could affect our band for years to come. • Wednesday, 11/7: No before or after-school activities scheduled.
  • Thursday, 11/8: Full Band Rehearsal from 7:30 - 8:30 am (a change from the published calendar time) Note: anyone missing this rehearsal without obtaining prior approval from a director (with the exception of an excused school absence) will not be allowed to attend Friday’s game. Bb Clarinet Parents work Concessions at SPHS Stadium beginning at 4:15 pm (please see attached concessions memo). “SOUTH PACIFIC” Pit Orchestra will rehearse from 4:30 - 6:30 pm in the SPHS Band Hall. The “Region Jazz Clinic” printed on your calendar does not involve any SPHS students.

    Happy Halloween, Tiger Band families!

Well, for all practical purposes, it looks like we are probably going into football play-offs - GO TIGERS!! The play-off games information will be given out weekly, as we don’t receive it until Monday or Tuesday the week of the game. I’m not sure how this will affect our annual Tiger Band Lock-In, but I’m working closely with Band President Lindsey Runyan and we have some contingency plans in place, just in case we have to reschedule due to a football game. Weekly Update: Week of 10/15

    Hello, Tiger Band families!

Well - this is it! The week that we’ve worked for since August. The show has come a long way, but we’ve still got some things to fix to get that 1st Division! Before we get to our reminders, we have a few people to thank:

  • The parent helpers at SP9 concessions were awesome this past week. We actually had 3 games: Freshman White, Freshman Gold and Freshman Blue, the first starting at 4:00, so it made for a very long evening. Thanks to all the trumpet/low reed parents who helped! A few parents stayed for all 3 games! Our profits were about $1400 and we closed after right after halftime on the third game because we were completely out of just about everything! You guys ROCK!
  • Thanks to our brave parent chaperones, concession and merchandise workers who volunteered to work at the Homecoming Game! The stadium was packed! We couldn’t have done it without you! Concessions made a killing and there were no issues with the band students. Thank you so much!
  • Thanks to all the parents who worked at the Central Texas Marching Showcase! It was a great day because of YOU! I know it was a very long day, but hopefully it will make you feel better to know that the Boosters profited over $10,000!! Woo-hoo! Special thanks must go to our hard-working event organizers: Jackie Mires, Olivia Generali, Lori Clyde and Fred Cartmill! All of the bands in attendance were talking about what a wonderful experience it was and most wanted to be sure we were doing it again next year! OH, if you accidentally went home with your lanyard and I.D. badge, would you please return them to the band office. They are actually quite expensive and we want to recycle them as many years as we can!
  • Due to the fact that we are trying to clean our show and making changes everyday, it is imperative that your student attend each rehearsal this week! O.k., on to our reminders:

  • Monday, October 15 - Full Band Rehearsal from 4:30 to 7:00 pm
  • Tuesday, October 16 - Full Band Rehearsal from 7:00 - 8:30 am
  • Wednesday, October 17 - Full Band Rehearsal from 7:00 - 8:30 am (Mr. Babbitt will be here to clinic.)
  • Thursday, October 18 - Full Band Rehearsal from 7:00 - 8:30 am Pit & Low Brass (Euphonium and Tuba) Parents work Concessions at SPHS Stadium beginning at 4:15 pm (please see attached concessions memo).
  • Friday, October 19 - SPHS vs. Leander - we’re at A.C. Bible Stadium (directions attached). Kids need to wear their show shirts to school today. We will follow our normal after-school game day schedule. Today is also the deadline to sing up for Region Orchestra Auditions (these auditions are for all instruments except bass clarinet, saxophone and euphonium). Please sign-up on the legal pad in Mr. Sedatole’s office no later than this afternoon.
  • Saturday, October 20 - It is a tradition in the SPHS Tiger Band that the band parents decorate their student’s locker for UIL Marching Contest. The bandhall will be open from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm - please come decorate your student’s locker before our rehearsal. We can even open the locker and allow you to place a small gift or good luck token inside. Please refrain from leaving gum, candy or food of any kind - we don’t want to attract pests of any kind. REGION 26 UIL MARCHING CONTEST at RRISD Athletic Complex (schedule is attached). Admission for spectators is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students.
  • Monday, October 22 - RRISD Festival of Bands at RRISD Athletic Complex (schedule is attached)
  • We now have Festival of Bands Tickets in the band office. The University of Texas Longhorn Band will be our guest at this awesome night of marching and music. Please print and complete the attached form, send it to Ms. Benford through your student and she will send the tickets back to you. You may check out a number of tickets to sell, or just pay for tickets for your family. Remember - our band only receives a percentage of the profits of tickets we sell through our office, so please buy all of your tickets here! We don’t get a penny from tickets sold at the gates! Note from Ms. Benford: if you send money with your student to buy tickets from me on Monday, you’ll have to come here to pick them up since the kids won’t be going home before the festival!
  • Don’t forget to order pictures of your student in the Central Texas Marching Showcase performance from MV Productions. Pictures can be viewed at
www.mvproductions.morephotos.com until the end of December. All purchases benefit the SPHS Band Boosters.
  • I am sorry to say that we didn’t receive enough orders via email to make it practical for the band parents to reorder another 36 show shirts. I do apologize to those of you who were unable to purchase on this year. We based our order this year on the number of shirts we ordered last year - I think we were blindsided by the number of parents and supporters that wanted shirts (I think the awesome graphic had something to do with it). I promise that we will do a better job in predicting sizes for next year’s order and we’ll be sure to have plenty for everyone.
  • As you are shopping for groceries this weekend, please put a bag of individually wrapped Halloween candy on your grocery list. Our band officers will be asking you for it next week as we start to put together “goody bags” to be given to the kids at the football game on the week of Halloween. Every student who wants to participate will be required to turn in one bag of candy (no gum, please). You’ll also have the opportunity to order a “Ghostwriter” for your student! More info on that next week!
  • Thanks for your support and have a gr-r-r-reat week, Tiger Band!
