During the Spring Semester, many of the announcements vary based on a student’s Concert Ensemble. Each director will send out their ensemble’s Weekly Update via email. Please make sure your email is up to date in Charms and that you are receiving the Update each week.

Hello Tiger Band students & parents!

CONGRATULATIONS to our awesome Tiger football team on another incredible season. Also - congratulations to our Tiger Band freshmen and freshmen parents - you have officially survived your first Stony Point football season. I cannot express enough thanks to our hard-working band parents who have sacrificed so much personal time and effort to plan activities, create props, chaperone, work on uniforms, haul equipment, serve meals, and hand out band aids - everything it takes to make this organization successful. You all are fantastic! If I tried to name everyone, it would make this a three page email and even then, I would probably leave someone out. You know who you are and please know that your service makes a difference in the lives of the students. Thanks also to our wonderful Tiger Band seniors for four great years of dedication and commitment. Your presence will truly be missed next year, but we’ll endeavor to carry on the legacy of excellence that you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Congratulations also to J. Fox, J. Chapman and J. Stevenson who will be representing SPHS in the TMEA Region 26 Concert Band. These students competed against some of the most talented high school musicians in the state this weekend and earned coveted chairs in the region band. They will perform with this organization in January. Congratulations as well to V. Sanchez for earning District band status in the piccolo room! Way to go!

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the band office before Friday. (By the way - I found out that Westwood band is going to Orlando this year as well. Their trip is $1100/per person.)

    BAND PARENT Q & A
Question: “My student is interested in being a part of the Tiger Band leadership next year. Is there anything she needs to be doing at this point?”
Answer: The band directors are constantly monitoring student behavior and looking for students with leadership potential. All students interested in band leadership need to be making good decisions each and everyday. You don’t have to have a title to be a leader in your band class - you just have to have high expectations of your own behavior and make choices that will help your band attain success. In April, students will have the opportunity to run for an elected office our sign up to be considered for an appointed position. But don’t wait until then to start impressing the directors! Do it everyday!

With the close of marching season, I must tell you that, for some of you, this will be your last weekly update from me. With the beginning of concert season, rest assured your Weekly Updates will continue, but they will be coming from the desk of your concert band director (Symphonic - Mr. Greene, Concert - Ms. Benford). Thanks to those of you who have been so conscientious about reading these updates. I hope they have helped organize your life in some small way during this crazy time of year. Merry Christmas to everyone - from the first week of August through the last play-off game, it’s truly been an honor being your director this marching season.

Have a gr-r-r-r-reat Winter break, Tiger Band! You deserve it!
    Mr. Sedatole

    BAND PARENT Q & A
Question: “How does my student find out how many letter jacket points he has accumulated?”

Answer: Students may see Mr. Sedatole and schedule an appointment to review their letter jacket point status at any time. This becomes especially important in January and May when letter jacket fittings occur for those students who have accumulated enough points. Once you have met with Mr. Sedatole, your CHARMS account will reflect your point status. More information on the letter jacket award and how you accumulate points can be found in the Tiger Band Handbook.

Next month’s Q & A - “My student is interested in being a part of the Tiger Band leadership next year. Is there anything she needs to be oing at this point?”

For girls, this is black hosiery and closed-toe dress shoes. If you have not received your concert uniform, keep checking the racks in the back of the band hall. All alterations should be complete by Wednesday.

    BAND PARENT Q & A
Question: “I think my student plays his instrument pretty good. Why would he need private lessons?”

Answer: Private lessons are not only for students experiencing difficulty playing their instrument. They are for every student who wants to become a better musician! Private lessons provide direct instruction for students in a one-on-one setting with a teacher who is a professional on their particular instrument. As good as the SPHS directors are, they do not know everything about every instrument. Students will advance much faster and become more proficient than students who are not in private lessons. If you would like more information about participation in the private lesson program, contact Ms. Benford at 428-7185.

Next week’s Q & A - “How does my student find out how many letter jacket points he has accumulated?”

Have a gr-r-r-r-reat week, Tiger Band!
